Low Protein Content in wheat crops

11 October 2012

As harvest approaches again it looks like the yield and grain protein issues have been reversed this year as aresult of the dry finish. Further reading about nitrogen flows around the plant from head emergence to a couple of weeks post sowing indicates that there is a possible relationship between flag leaf and or pannicle N content and harvest grain protein.  Will be persuing this next season as it may provide us with some solid evidence when to try a late season N application for protein boost.

  • Dry finish around Goondiwindi but protein is still very low in most paddocks. Not much N fertiliser used out here and I suspect soil levels are low after 2 wet summers and soil carbon low and falling further. More soil testing needed....
